Bears Advance to SoCon Semifinals for First Time

Mercer advances to SoCon Tournament semifinals with 3-0 win over Wofford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fourth-seeded Mercer downed No. 5-seed Wofford in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15), in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Southern Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The win was Mercer's first-ever in a volleyball tournament quarterfinal match, resulting a berth to the semifinals, which will be played on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-18) | Roberta Todd started the opening set with a kill, followed by a Wofford attack error to give the Bears the early advantage. After a quick tie (3-3) Mercer extended its lead until the Terriers struck with four straight points to claim the lead for the first time, 12-10. Paige Alsten, alongside Todd, connected on four of five consecutive points to allow the Bears to reclaim the lead (17-14). Mercer closed out the opening set on a 7-0 run, including three kills from Brittany Major.

Set 2 (25-18) | Despite Wofford earning a 4-2 lead, the Bears quickly retaliated with a 4-0 run that included back-to-back Alsten kills, giving the Bears the advantage (6-4). The Terriers were able to tie the match up at 10 after a service ace, but Mercer closed the set by outscoring Wofford, 15-8, including two Todd aces and three kills. Annie Karle also produced three kills to help close out the set, 25-18.

Set 3 (25-15) | Mercer notched the first two points for the final set to take the early lead. Wofford tied the set up five different times, before taking the lead for one rally at 9-8. Major and Alsten notched one kill each to put the Bears back in front. The Terriers tied the set up once more (10-10) before Mercer closed out the match outscoring Wofford 15-5.

Mercer will continue its stay in Greensboro, N.C. to compete in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Bears will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 against No. 1 ETSU, which swept The Citadel during the quarterfinals.

Mercer fell twice to the Bucs earlier this season, picking up just one set at home on Oct. 12. The Bears trail ETSU 21-5 in the overall series. The Bucs head coach, Lindsey Devine, was announced Coach of the Year alongside Leah Clayton (Player of the Year), Marija Popovic (Libero of the Year) and Alyssa Kvarta who all earned the All-SoCon First Team honors. ETSU also placed Mariah McPartland and Braedyn Tutton on the All-SoCon Second Team.

ETSU trails Mercer in service aces, averaging 1.18 per set while dominating in the other six statistical categories, ranking higher than Mercer in: hitting percentage (.248), opponent hitting percentage (.159), assists (12.70), kills (13.67), blocks (2.35) and digs (15.88).
