Mercer Ends Season with 3-0 Loss to #1 ETSU in SoCon Semifinals

Bears have greatest winning season since joining SoCon in 2014
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fourth-seeded Mercer fell to No. 1-seed ETSU in straight sets, 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 24-26), in the semifinal round of the 2018 Southern Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The loss concluded the Bear's 16-13 season, giving Mercer its highest winning percentage (.552) since joining the SoCon in 2014. The Orange and Black also recorded a .500 conference season, going 8-8 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (15-25) | ETSU jumped to the early 4-2 opening set start before Paige Alsten sparked a 4-1 run to steal the lead, 6-5, with two kills and forcing the Bucs to take an early timeout. ETSU came back strong outscoring the Bears 20-9, despite Annie Karle registering three kills.

Set 2 (20-25) | After four different lead changes to begin the second set, the Bucs generated a 12-4 run to take the front, 16-10. Mercer produced its own 10-4 run, bringing the Bears within one (20-19). The Bucs closed out the set notching the final five out of the six points.

Set 3 (24-26) | Mercer's final match consisted of 19 tie-ups and 10 lead changes. Mercer gained its largest lead at 19-16 after Brittany Major recorded her ninth kill of the match. After a 7-3 ETSU run, the Bucs reclaimed the lead 24-23. The Bears were able to tie the match up one last time (24-24) after an ETSU service ace, however Mercer dropped the final two points to lose the set 26-24.

NOTABLES
- Mercer competed in its first-ever tournament semifinal postseason match.
- The Bears bested ETSU in total attacks (103) and tied the Bucs with seven total blocks. The Bears produced zero block errors while ETSU notched four.
- Roberta Todd led the Bears with a team-high 11 kills, connecting on 29 attacks and only three errors.
- Brittany Major is the only Bear to have recorded double-digit kills in both postseason matches, notching 10 kills against ETSU and 11 against Wofford yesterday. The freshman notched a team-high .421 hitting percentage.
- Maddie Nunley notched a match-high 29 assists. The sophomore also registered seven digs, one block and one ace.
- Emilee Wissmach notched a team-high 12 digs. The sophomore has 369 total digs for the season.
- Paige Alsten connected on eight kills and zero errors on 19 attacks, averaging a .421 hitting percentage. Annie Karle also garnered eight kills.
- Alexia Morey generated six total blocks for a match-high. The junior has totaled 92 blocks for the season, tying her season-high today.
