Selph and Calloway Lead Bears to First Win
11/12/2018 9:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Bears walk out of Hanner Fieldhouse with narrow, road victory
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer Women's Basketball team walked away from a hostile Hanner Fieldhouse with a hard-fought 79-72 road victory on Monday night, improving to 1-1 on the season. KeKe Calloway led all scorers with 31 points, while Rachel Selph connected for a career-high 16 points, all of which came in the second half. Â
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears were able to overcome adversity from the charity stripe, despite knocking in 8-of-12 attempts from the line. Georgia Southern finished the contest 25-of-37 from the line, outscoring Mercer by 17 points at the free throw line alone.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Shannon Titus proved to be a spark for the Orange & Black tonight, finishing with career highs in points (12), assists (6) and rebounds (5). Titus corralled four offensive boards for the Bears and forced timely turnovers on the defensive end.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears got on board first following an offensive rebound by Rachel Selph and a three from the wing off the hands of Linnea Rosendal. The Eagles responded with a 16-7 run to take a quarter-high six-point advantage with 2:40 left to play in the opening frame. Mercer would eventually tie the game up at 18 apiece following KeKe Calloway's make from the charity stripe. Georgia Southern claimed the last basket in the opening 10 minutes thanks to a jumper in the paint for the 20-18 first-quarter lead.
Â
Mercer outscored the Eagles 15-13 in the second stanza, deadlocking the contest at 33-33 as both teams headed into the locker room. Calloway netted six points in the second quarter, including the first two baskets to open the frame. Once again the Eagles built a six-point lead but were unable to sustain it as the Bears clawed back following a Shannon Titus put-back layup and a Rosendal corner three.
Â
Six seemed to be the magic number as back-to-back threes from the Eagles provided the home squad with a 39-33 lead to open the second half. Mercer later trailed 41-35 before going on an 8-0 run following four points from Selph and Titus. The Bears did not relinquish the lead until the final shot of the quarter as Tatum Barber knocked down a three to give the Eagles the one-point lead. Selph finished 6-of-8 in the third quarter alone to ignite the Mercer offense with 12 points.
Â
The fourth quarter proved to be a back-and-forth affair through the first five minutes, with Georgia Southern reclaiming a five-point advantage. Trailing 64-59, the Bears went on an 8-3 run to tie the game at 67 as Calloway scored eight consecutive for Mercer. Calloway stepped up in the final minutes, adding to her game-high total with a crucial three with 39 ticks left on the clock to give Mercer the 74-70 lead. That was all the Bears needed as the senior guard iced the game with five free throws down the stretch.

COACH'S CORNER
Final thoughts on the game:
"I think at the end of the day we were able to fight through some adversity in this game and stay together as a team. Great leadership from Amanda and I am very pleased with this team's ability to finish the game without two key players."
Â
On Rachel's second-half explosion:
"I talked to Rachel at halftime about deciding to be a dominant post player or is she going to just blend. She is a very gifted, talented, hardworking player. For us to be successful we need her to show up every game this season. I was pleased with her performance tonight."
Â
On Shannon Titus' night:
"Shannon is a huge part of this team and she is getting more confident every day in practice and works really hard outside of what we are doing with skill sets. She is a gifted athlete and plays so hard. She did a great job of running the floor and creating numbers for us offensively."
