Mercer Signs Three Future Bears in 2019-20 Recruiting Class
11/14/2018 3:35:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer Women's Basketball Head Coach Susie Gardner announced the signing of three individuals to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
The Bears will graduate five players at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign prior to welcoming Jill Harris, Jordan McLaughlin and PJ Wintermyer to the Mercer Family.
Â
"I am very excited about this class so far," stated Gardner. "We have added a point guard, shooter and a post that can face up and score with her back to the basket. We hope to add at least two more players to the mix in April, but this is an exciting day for our program."
Â
Jill Harris
Navarre, Fla.
Crestview High School
Guard
5-9
Â
Jill Harris was recently at Emerald Ridge High School in Washington State where she averaged 16.9 points per game, 5.3 boards, 7.8 assists and 2.6 steals as a junior. She is currently playing point guard for Crestview High School and head coach Steve Williams, entering her first season with the team. Harris played for the Xpress for one season under head coach Jackie Robinson in Washington. Harris also gets the job done off the court, being named to both the Honors Society and the Dean's List.
Â
What Coach Williams Says about Jill
"In the short time I have had the privilege of coaching Jill, I believe she has all the intangibles you are looking for in a guard. She has great vision, is an outstanding shooter and is an instinctive defender. We are very fortunate to have Jill in our program."
Â
What Coach Gardner Likes about Jill
"We were very fortunate to find Jill as she is originally from the state of Washington. If not for her high school coach, Steve Williams calling me and letting me know she had moved to Florida, we may have never known about Jill. She is a combo guard that can shoot it from deep and has the handle of a point and the shot of a shooting guard. We will be in need of shooters next year, so her addition is very exciting."
Â
Jordan McLaughlin
Charlotte, N.C.
Phillip O Berry
Guard
5-6
Â
Jordan McLaughlin is entering her fourth year at Phillip O Berry located in Charlotte, N.C. where she plays point guard for head coach Kelvin Brim. With the team, McLaughlin was named two-time team MVP and has eclipsed 1,000 points in just three seasons and is a three-time All-Conference player. McLaughlin was also named to First Team All-State, First Team All-Region and First Team All-Mecklenburg County. As a junior, McLaughlin averaged 19.2 points per game, 6.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.7 steals en route to being named SoMeck Conference Player of the Year. McLaughlin played club basketball with CBC Elite to 1Dream, spending six years as the point guard for Wayne Hinton. With her travel team, Jordan won the state championship, ATL Summer Slam Championship, Battle of the Boro Championship and the Deep South title.
Â
What Coach Brim Says about Jordan
"Jordan has been one of the most talented basketball players, male or female, that I have had the pleasure to work with. Her high basketball IQ, mixed with her incredible work ethic, makes this opportunity to continue her basketball at the collegiate level well deserved. I'm confident that she will add immediate value to Mercer and the women's basketball program."
Â
What Coach Gardner Likes about Jordan
"Jordan is a dynamic, energetic and passionate point guard. She has an intense love of the game and has the skill of leadership that I look for in players, especially point guards. Jordan will bring speed and excitement to our program and I think she will raise the energy in practice and games every day."
Â
PJ Wintermyer
Vero Beach, Fla.
Vero Beach HS
Forward
6-1
Â
PJ Wintermyer plays forward for Vero Beach High School and head coach Rahshard Morgan. With Vero Beach, Wintermyer led her squad to a state championship, regional championship and three district titles. Wintermyer is a two-time leading scorer for Vero Beach and was named All-City TC Palm First Team. PJ played club for DME Sports Academy, spending one year on the team playing the stretch forward for Michael Pannagio. Wintermyer averaged 18.6 points per game as a junior and 12.0 rebounds per contest.
Â
What Coach Morgan Says about PJ
"PJ's ability at 6'1" to handle the basketball, shoot the three and elevate on her mid-range jumper are superior for a player her size. She is a hard-working, dedicated student-athlete that works out at 5 a.m. to improve her basketball skills so she has the time in the evening to study for advanced placement classes. Vero Beach HS is beyond ecstatic for the opportunity PJ has to play basketball at Mercer."
Â
What Coach Gardner Likes about PJ
"PJ is a combination of Amanda and Rachel. She can shoot the ball like Rachel and is athletic like Amanda. We are losing three posts to graduation so we feel that PJ can come in and make an immediate contribution to our team."
Â
Home Sweet Home
The Bears will open up their home schedule tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when Mercer welcomes Florida into Hawkins Arena. Mercer will then turn around to play UCF on Sunday at 2 p.m.
