Martineau first SoCon Player of the Month since 2014
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Trevor Martineau laid claim to yet another award this season after being named the Men's Soccer Southern Conference Player of the Month for October. The league office announced the honor on Tuesday morning.
Martineau is the first Mercer player and SoCon freshman to win the monthly award since former Mercer great Will Bagrou took home the hardware in October 2014.
Martineau had a breakout month for the Bears, scoring five goals, registering five assists and earning 15 of his SoCon-leading 25 points. The freshman forward recorded at least one point in six of the seven matches played in October, leading Mercer to a 6-1 overall record with four game-winning goals. The Texas native collected back-to-back game winners against UNCG and Furman, with the strike against the Paladins proving to be the title-clinching goal.
Martineau averaged 2.14 points per game and was twice named SoCon Men's Soccer Player of the Week in a span of three weeks. Martineau became the first freshman to ever claim three player of the week honors in a single season in the SoCon. Martineau's standout month guided Mercer to the 2018 SoCon Regular Season Title, outscoring opponents 19-8, including 16-6 against SoCon foes.
Martineau and the Bears will return to action on Friday against UNCG in the SoCon Championship Semifinal match in Johnson City, Tenn. Kickoff is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship match on Sunday.
