Top-seeded Mercer falls in semifinal match, 1-0, to No. 5 Spartans
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Top-seeded Mercer was eliminated from the 2018 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 loss to No. 5 UNCG in the semifinal round on Friday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
The Bears (12-4-2), who won the 2016 and 2017 SoCon Tournament titles, failed to reach the title match for just the second time in five years.
Stat of the Match
Mercer out-shot the Spartans (8-8-2), 15-8, over the course of the match but could not find the back of the net against UNCG's defense. The Spartans entered the match ranked third in the SoCon with just 1.24 goals allowed per match.
How It Happened
The Bears registered five shots in the first 20 minutes of play but put just two on goal, both being header attempts by Trevor Martineau that were saved by UNCG goalkeeper Jon Milligan. Despite Mercer pushing the pace early on, UNCG struck first with an unassisted goal by Alex Henderson, who juked a defender and found the bottom-right corner of the net from just outside the center of the box.
Mercer out-shot the Spartans, 8-3, in the first half and had three corner-kick opportunities, but couldn't find the equalizer before the intermission whistle.
A quiet second half heated up in the 69th minute when UNCG was issued a yellow card. Dawson Gideon, who subbed in during the 70th minute, had Mercer's best scoring attempt of the second half when his shot from inside the box was blocked by a UNCG defender despite the Spartans' goalkeeper being out of position. Gideon's shot was one of just three by the Bears in the second half.
