Bears Roll Past Charlotte in 57-40 Win
12/8/2018 3:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Hot start powers Mercer to third home win of the season
MACON, Ga. – Mercer used a hot start and a stifling defensive performance to defend its home court in a 57-40 win over Charlotte at Hawkins Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Nine different Bears scored in the contest, led by KeKe Calloway (14) while they held the visiting 49ers (5-3) to 29 percent from the field and a season-low 40 points. Mercer improves to 5-5 following the victory.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's defense came to play in the 200th game inside Hawkins Arena, holding Charlotte to just 16 made field goals, while forcing 18 turnovers. The Bears held the 49ers to a season-low 40 points, knocking down just 29 percent from the field and 21 percent from beyond the arc.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Amanda Thompson continues to fill up the stat sheet as well as dominate in the hustle categories. The senior forward chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, to compliment two blocks and two steals on the evening.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
A highly-efficient first quarter helped the Bears own a 19-9 lead after 10 minutes of play. Mercer shot 7-of-10 from the field in the quarter, including 5-of-7 from downtown. Linnea Rosendal drained a trio of the three-pointers while KeKe Calloway hit the other two, which were her first shots of the contest.
Â
The Bears' sharp-shooting continued into the second quarter when Rachel Selph and Amanda Thompson hit a pair of mid-range jumpers – assisted by Shannon Titus and Calloway, respectively – to force Charlotte to take a timeout at the 7:04 mark; Mercer led 23-9 at that point. Mercer continued to dominate the pace of the game, allowing just nine points by the 49ers en route to a 31-18 halftime advantage.
Â
The Bears did not let off the gas, outscoring Charlotte 17-12 in the third quarter, beginning with a 9-6 run through the first five minutes to stretch their lead to 16. Mercer would extend its lead to a game-high 22 points with 1:28 remaining in the quarter following a layup by Amoria Neal-Tysor for two of her career-high eight points.
Â
Charlotte claimed the final quarter by the score of 10-9 as Mercer was able to utilize its bench and receive valuable minutes from its reserves. Shannon Titus tallied four of Mercer's nine points in the quarter, including knocking down a pair of free throws.

COACH'S CORNER
On the toughness of the schedule:
"This is a tough non-conference schedule and I truly don't believe that our record shows how good this team is. We are a really good basketball team. We have played some really good games against some really tough teams. A schedule like this is allowing me to make sure that our players are prepared for any scenario they may face in conference play."
Â
On the play of Amoria Neal-Tysor:
"Amoria was able to get in the game and push the tempo for us. KeKe is better suited for the two-guard. As the season started, Amoria was not ready to run this team. However, she has kept working and who better than to coach her than Sydni Means. Amoria has the ability to score and she plays hard, while making us play faster."
Â
On having a player like Amanda:
"Amanda is an unbelievable player. She is a glue player to this program. People that know basketball can appreciate that at 5-9, she is our leading rebounder and she can run point for us. She is our leader and our captain. She leads the team in taking charges. She has the intangibles that you cannot teach, it just comes naturally to her."
