Mercer advances to SoCon Championship title game with 18-17 victory
MACON, Ga. – No. 4-seed Mercer advanced to the Southern Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship game with an 18-17 upset victory over top-seeded Detroit Mercy in the semifinal round on Thursday afternoon at Five Star Stadium.

The Bears (8-10) used a 10-goal second half to beat Detroit Mercy (10-8) for the second time this season and advance to their first-ever conference title game. Mercer survived a late rally by the Titans, who scored the final four goals of the game to pull within one goal before the final whistle sounded.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A closely-fought first half opened with both teams trading one goal apiece over the first minute and 30 seconds; Erica Coyne found the net with an assist by Lindsey Zeltwanger for Mercer's first score. After Detroit Mercy reclaimed the lead, 2-1, Mercer battled back with two consecutive goals via Zeltwanger and Eva Thorn. The Bears were held scoreless for the following 18 minutes, however, as Detroit Mercy raced out to a 7-3 advantage with five straight goals, including a trio by Meredith Moore.

Coyne's second goal of the contest – assisted again by Zeltwanger – ended Mercer's scoring drought with 5:57 remaining in the first half and sparked a five-goal run that gave the Bears an 8-7 lead. The run included Coyne's third goal, a second goal by Zeltwanger and a pair of consecutive scores by Catie Snee that put Mercer in front. Detroit Mercy knotted the contest with 20 seconds left before intermission.

An unassisted goal by Kelly Hagerty five minutes into the second half regained the lead for Mercer. The Titans would score three of the first five goals in the second half, however, to take an 11-10 lead with at 18:52. The back-and-forth contest continued as Mercer scored eight of the next 10 goals to claim its largest lead, 18-13, with less just over three minutes left. Five of Mercer's final six goals were unassisted.

Detroit Mercy made things interesting with four late goals, including a final score with 32 seconds remaining to pull within one of the Bears. A pivotal draw control by Jo Imbriani sealed the game for Mercer.

Lindsey Zeltwanger stuffed the stat sheet with a well-rounded performance for the championship-bound Bears on Thursday. The senior captain totaled six points (three goals, three assists) and added two groundballs, two draw controls and one caused turnover.
