MACON, Ga. – Mercer Women's Basketball Head Coach Susie Gardner announced Wednesday that former Georgia Lady Bulldogs Head Coach and 2007 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Andy Landers, will be the special guest at the 2018 Women's Basketball Tip-Off Fundraiser on Oct. 9 at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in downtown Macon, Ga.
Â
The banquet will be the official tip off leading up to the Bears' season opener in November. The event will commence at 6 p.m. and the price of admission will be $50 to cover: a catered dinner from Edgar's Hospitality Group, a chance to meet the 2018-19 Mercer Women's Basketball roster and the opportunity to hear both Coach Gardner and Coach Landers speak. For more information, please contact Drew Landers at (478) 301-2059, or by email at landers_aj@mercer.edu.
Â
Andy Landers began his coaching career at Roane State Community College, compiling an 82-21 record in four seasons before taking over the helm at Georgia at just 26 years of age. Landers guided Georgia to a 16-12 mark in his first season, later taking the Lady Bulldogs to the program's first-ever Final Four appearance in just his fourth season as the head coach.
Â
During his 36-year stint at Georgia (1979-2015), Landers claimed seven Southeastern Conference titles, four SEC Tournament Championships, was a three-time SEC Coach of the Year (1984, 1986, 1996), and was named NCAA Coach of the Year on four occasions (1986, 1987, 1996, 2000). The Lady Bulldogs competed in five NCAA Final Fours under Lander's tutelage, including 1983 and 1985 with Susie Gardner on the roster. Georgia would finish the 1985 season as the national runner-up, falling to Old Dominion by the final score of 70-65.
Â
Landers coached two Olympians, 11 Kodak All-Americans and 25 future Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) players. Landers was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and at the time of his retirement, Georgia's five Final Four appearances ranked sixth among all schools. Landers is also a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame as the state's winningest college basketball coach at any level. The Tennessee native tallied 944 career wins, ranking fifth all-time among women's college basketball coaches.
Â
Following his retirement, Landers has worked for ESPN and its sister-channel SEC Network as a women's college basketball analyst.
