Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer applied the early pressure and did not let up, firing three shots on frame in the first 12 minutes of action to control the tempo. The Bears finally broke through in the 20th minute following Ramario Thompson's first goal of the season. Roberto Arteaga found Thompson inside the box on a set piece and the Jamaica native took advantage of his first shot on the season, lacing the ball to the upper left corner for the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Bears doubled their lead to two in the very next minute of play. This time it would be Trevor Martineau to score, his second goal in as many games. Martineau received the ball following a flick from Leo Toledo Jr. to set up the strike. Martineau was drug down to the ground by a defender and still managed to get the kick off and keep it out of the reach of the Jacksonville keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Â
Neither squad scored for the next 59 minutes until the Bears added an insurance strike in the 80th minute. Dawson Gideon provided the third goal for the Orange & Black, his first of the season. Gideon's initial shot was turned away before the ball found the feet of Martineau. The Texas native flicked the ball back to the middle where Gideon knocked it down before placing it in the near side for the 3-0 advantage.
Â
Mercer placed the cherry on top in the 88th minute of play with its fourth goal of the evening. Kalvin Lingard found the back of the net in his first match of the season. Lingard's goal began with a beautiful ball from Martineau to Ricardo Packer Jr. in the far corner. Ricardo took one touch and passed the ball across the frame to Jack Wilson who then completed the one-touch pass to Lingard in front of the net. Lingard took advantage of his first collegiate shot and buried the ball into the back of the net for the 4-0 victory.
