JR DeRose notches career-high seven saves in 1-0 loss
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears dropped a tough 1-0 loss to the Panthers of Georgia State on Saturday night at Betts Stadium. Mercer falls to 4-2-2 following the loss after beginning the year with a 4-0-0 mark. The Panthers improve to 6-2, extending their win streak to six matches.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The shot count was even at 16 apiece with Mercer tallying nine in the opening half. The contest proved to be a physical match with the two squads combining for 40 fouls in the 90-minute period.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer nearly broke through in the 12th minute of the match as Trevor Martineau's header beat Paul Tyson before banging off the crossbar. Martineau had another look as the ball ricocheted his way, but the second attempt harmlessly sailed over the net.
The Panthers scored the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute on their fifth shot of the match. After corralling a loose ball, Alex Summerfield chipped the shot over DeRose's head for his second goal of the season.
The Bears had a few more looks at the equalizer, including Kobe Perez's free kick in the 35th minute that was turned away by Tyson. Martineau and Ramario Thompson had quality looks in the second half, however Tyson turned both attempts away en route to his four saves on the match.
