Bears Stumble against Dolphins in Jacksonville
1/2/2019 5:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Amanda Thompson collected her fourth consecutive double-double in loss
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mercer Women's Basketball squad saw its four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday, falling to Jacksonville by the final score of 71-66 at Swisher Gymnasium. With the loss, Mercer falls to 8-6 on the season with one final non-conference showdown to play. Â
Â
Amanda Thompson provided a spark for Mercer, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double effort. Shannon Titus also chipped in for 13 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Jacksonville entered the game as the 16th leading rebounding team in the NCAA, averaging just under 45 boards per contest. The Bears held Jacksonville to 34 rebounds, outrebounding the Dolphins by five. Thompson was the only double-digit rebounder on the floor with 11.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Just two days after being named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the third time, Thompson filled up the stat sheet yet again. The senior forward corralled her fourth consecutive double-double and sixth of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams traded short runs in the opening quarter with Mercer scoring the first five points following a layup by Rachel Selph and a fast break three from Linnea Rosendal. The Dolphins retaliated with an 11-2 run to build a four-point advantage. Jacksonville held the two-point lead at the end of the quarter following a layup by Tia Benvenuti to trim the deficit in half.
Â
The Dolphins built their lead to seven points midway through the second quarter following a three pointer by Mariah Batz. However, it was Mercer's turn to respond, closing out the quarter on a 12-3 run to take the 33-31 lead heading into the locker room. Jaron Dougherty played a critical part in the run, accounting for four points, one rebound and one steal. Back-to-back buckets from KeKe Calloway and Thompson to close the half provided Mercer with its only lead in the second quarter.
Â
Mercer registered the first four points of the second half to build the lead to six, but was unable to fend off an 8-0 run to put the Dolphins back on top. Neither team led by more than two points in the closing minutes of the third quarter as Thompson knocked down a pair of free throws to reclaim the 45-44 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
Â
Unanswered jumpers from Thompson, Titus and Ally Welch kicked off the final quarter and gave the Bears their largest lead of the game at 51-44 with 7:41 left to play. Jacksonville responded with a dagger of a run, 16-4, over the next four minutes. The Dolphins turned on the press and forced four Mercer turnovers during the span, racing out to a 60-55 advantage in the process. Jacksonville hit a three with 1:29 left to play to stretch its lead to eight as the Bears were down but not out. Calloway knocked down a pair of threes in the closing minute to pull Mercer within three, but the Bears were unable to overcome the late deficit.

COACH'S CORNER
Final thoughts:
"We broke the press easily to start the game but missed open jumpers in the first quarter. We played very well in the second quarter and took the lead at halftime. However, we didn't have enough people play to their potential this game. It was a disappointing effort from opening tip to the final buzzer."
Â
On the play of Thompson and Titus:
"We are asking Amanda to do a little bit too much, she had six turnovers tonight. Her scoring and rebounding is very important, but we are also asking her to break the press when nobody besides KeKe stepped up to help break it. Shannon shot the ball well, finishing 6-for-7 and gave us a spark with the press defense. You have to have five players on the floor at the same time to win basketball games."
