
DeRose and Martineau Named SoCon Players of the Week

The Bears swept the weekly SoCon honors for the second time this season
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – JR DeRose and Trevor Martineau of the Mercer men's soccer team have been named SoCon Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Last week, DeRose and Martineau led the Bears to a 2-1 week, with wins over Winthrop and North Florida.

DeRose started all three games in goal for Mercer and recorded one shutout. He tallied 277 minutes in goal, 10 saves and a goals-against-average of 0.97. In the final game of the week for the Bears, DeRose recorded five saves and did not allow a goal in a 2-0 victory over North Florida. The shutout was his third shutout of the season, which leads the SoCon.

For the season, DeRose ranks first in the SoCon with a goals-against-average of 1.15 and has recorded 35 saves.

The weekly honor is DeRose's second of his career, with both coming this season.

Over the past week, Martineau tallied three goals and six points. In the 2-1 win over Winthrop, Martineau scored both goals for his second multi-goal game of the year. He added his third goal of the week on Monday night in a 2-0 win over North Florida.

This season, Martineau leads the SoCon in points (23), points per game (2.09), goals (8), goals per game (0.73), assists (7), and assists per game (0.64). His 23 points rank him fifth in the NCAA. He is seven points behind Milan Iloski of UCLA, who leads the NCAA with 30 points.

The weekly award is Martineau's seventh of his career and the fourth this season.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to open SoCon play against Wofford. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Â
