Men’s Soccer Faces UNCG in SoCon Championship

Mercer is looking for its third SoCon Tournament Title and first since 2017

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer squares off with UNCG in the Southern Conference Championship on Sunday evening at the UNCG Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

The winner of this year's tournament will receive the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason. The NCAA Selection Show will air on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY | LAST MEETING
UNCG leads the all-time series over the Bears, 5-9-1. Earlier this season the Bears were defeated by the Spartans, 2-0, in Greensboro, N.C. The Bears outshot the Spartans, 13-8 in the match. Micah Albert and Cameron Fowler scored for UNCG in the previous matchup.

NOTABLES

Mercer is looking to win its third Conference Tournament in four years. The Bears won the SoCon Tournament in 2016 and 2017. The 2016 and 2017 tournament wins are the only SoCon Tournament Titles for the Bears.
Over the last six seasons, the SoCon regular season champion has not won the SoCon Conference Tournament. The last school to win both the regular season and the conference tournament was Elon back in 2012.
Mercer had three players earn All-SoCon honors this season. Trevor Martineau earned First Team All-SoCon honors, while Leo Toledo Jr earned Second Team All-SoCon honors and Dylan Gaither was named to the All-Freshman Team.
In the Bears win over VMI to close out the 2019 regular season, Trevor Martineau scored four goals. The four goals he scored in the match was a career-high. His previous high was two goals score in a single contest.
Trevor Martineau ranks first in the SoCon in points, points per game, goals, goals per game, assists, assists per game, and tied for most game-winning goals. He has 36 points in 19 games. He has a SoCon high 13 goals and 10 assists this season.
Trevor Martineau has tallied 61 points over his two years at Mercer, which is tied for ninth all-time in Mercer history.
The 10 assists for Martineau are fifth in the nation and his 13 goals rank him 11th in the nation. His 36 points on the season are the fifth most in the NCAA and he is only three points being Robbie Robinson of Clemson and Miguel Berry of San Diego for the NCAA lead.
Martineau has scored 22 goals in his career for the Bears, which is eighth all-time.
The Bears have the third-best goals-against average in the SoCon. Mercer is only allowing 1.33 goals per game this season. In 19 games, the Bears have allowed 26 goals. JR DeRose has five shutouts this season the most in the SoCon.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans enter the SoCon Tournament Championship with a record of 9-8-1 on the season. They are coming off a 3-2 overtime victory over sixth seed Belmont in the SoCon Semifinals last Sunday night. The Spartans have won four straight matches with its loss coming to at Furman on Oct. 22. UNCG has scored 32 goals this year. Leading the team is Albert Pedra, who has 10 goals. Micah Albert follows with seven and Casey Penland has scored five. On the 32 goals, the Spartans have 28 assists. In goal, Brendan Pulley leads the way with 1096 minutes played. He has a goals-against-average of 0.98 on the season. He has made 30 saves and recorded three shutouts. UNCG is allowing 1.31 goals per game.
