Mercer beats Furman in five sets
MACON, Ga.  – The Mercer Bears volleyball team went 3-2 (25-16, 11-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12) Saturday afternoon against the Furman Paladins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One (25-16) | Furman started off strong scoring four of the first five points. The Bears would retaliate by going on a 12-2 run behind kills from Annie Karle, Alexia Morey, Roberta Todd and Brittany Major. Sophomore Brittany Major would lead the Bears in the set with four blocks and four kills. Mercer would take the set off two Paladin errors and a service ace from Amber Gibson.

Set Two (11-25) | Brittany Major and Amber Gibson opened up the scoring for the Bears in the second set with a kill and a service ace. Furman would take over the set, holding the Bears to 11 points on the set. Five Bears would record points in the set. Â

Set Three (20-25) | The third set was back and forth with both teams taking turns scoring in the beginning. Junior Roberta Todd opened the set with a kill from Nya Steele. The Paladins would go on a 10-1 run to put distance between them and the Bears. Mercer would score 10 of the last 16 points but Furman would take the set.

Set Four (25-21) | Set four was a battle between the two teams. Annie Karle scored the first Mercer point with an assist from Sophomore Nya Steele. Roberta Todd, Brittany Major, Jaida Howell, and Alexia Morey followed behind her, scoring Mercer's points. The Bears ended the set scoring four of the last seven points. Roberta Todd ended the set with a kill from Nya Steele to force a deciding set.

Set Five (15-12) | Mercer started the last set going on a 6-1 run behind two Furman errors and a service ace from Amber Gibson. Furman would come back and take a 8-7 lead before both teams switched sides. Alexia Morey would tie the set at ten apiece before the Bears 5-2 run to end the set and take the match. Â

The Bears will head to Spartanburg, S.C. for the 2019 Southern Conference volleyball tournament. They are set to play Western Carolina on Friday, November 22.

NOTABLES
- Sophomore Brittany Major recorded 19 kills in tonight's set, her second highest of her career. Her highest, 20, was recorded her freshman year against Wofford.
- Amber Gibson tied her season-high three service aces in the match. She recorded three in the matches against New Orleans and Tennessee State.
- Jaida Howell had six total bocks in the match, her second highest of her career behind her seven against Western Carolina.
