
Bears Upset the Catamounts in Five Sets

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The Mercer Bears volleyball team won a 3-2 match (25-20, 31-29, 21-25, 14-25, 15-12) Friday night against the No. 3 Western Carolina Catamounts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One (25-20) | The Bears opened the gates scoring the first five points of the set behind kills from Annie Karle and Brittany Major. Western Carolina would battle back but Mercer would keep an 18-10 lead. The Catamounts would go on 7-3 run to close the gap but the Bears would close it out, winning 25-20. Â

Set Two (31-29) | Mercer started the second set just like the first behind three Catamount errors. Western Carolina would go on a 5-1 run to take their first lead of the match. The Bears would tie it up at 14, but the Catamounts would go on another run. Alexia Morey would get back-to-back kills to tie it up at 20. Mercer and Western Carolina would fight till the end, going back and forth. Brittany Major would record two kills to take the second set.

Set Three (21-25) | Western Carolina scored the first two points to open the third set. Nya Steele gave the Bears their first point and start a 4-0 run. The Bears and Catamounts would stay together in the scoring until Western Carolina would go on a 5-1 run and then a 6-2 run to put some distance between the teams. Mercer would fight back within three behind two Annie Karle kills. The Catamounts would take the set.

Set Four (14-25) | Western Carolina started the fourth set scoring six of the first nine points. The Bears would get within one with a service error by the Catamounts but the Catamounts would take off going on a 5-0 run. Western Carolina would take the fourth set 25-14.

Set Five (15-10) | The Bears started the final set going on a 4-0 run to open the set. Brittany Major would record 19 kills, which tied her season high. The Catamounts would come within one. Mercer would close out the set and the match with a kill from Alexia Morey

The Bears will battle against the ETSU Bucs tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in the Southern Conference semifinals.
