Mercer Clips Rattlers in Mid-Week Road Win

Bears quell Florida A&M rally for 7-6 victory
Â
The Bears (3-1) led by as many as four runs in the fifth inning before Florida A&M (0-5) threatened with five runs over a three-inning stretch of the fifth to seventh frames. Beau Healy (1-0), who had a predetermined pitch count entering the game, earned the win after allowing just one run over the first four innings.
Â
The Bears wasted little time establishing a lead after Kyle Dockus reached base on a fielding error in the top of the first. After a stolen base and wild pitch that allowed him to advance to third base, Dockus scored on a sacrifice fly by Kel Johnson. Leyton Pinckney added to the lead the next inning with a two-run home run, the first of his collegiate career.
Â
Florida A&M plated one run in the bottom of the second, but would not score again until the fifth, largely because of Healy's efforts on the mound. The sophomore left-hander struck out four Rattlers and allowed just one baserunner past second base. Trevor Austin delivered a two-run single in the top of the fifth, scoring RJ Yeager and Angelo DiSpigna to make it a 5-1 game.
Â
The Rattlers' rally started in the home half of the fifth when tallied four hits and two runs off Taylor Lobus to bring it back to a two-run gap. Another run by Florida A&M in the sixth made it a 5-4 lead for the Bears.
Â
Mercer received the relief it needed in the seventh with a sacrifice fly by Bill Knight and an RBI single from Pinckney. Florida A&M again rallied, plating two more runs in the home half of the seventh before Mercer turned to senior pitcher Kevin Coulter. Despite allowing six hits, Coulter did not allow a run the rest of the game en route to picking up the three-inning save.
Â
Player of the Game
Kevin Coulter picked up his third save in four games as he recorded the final nine outs of the game for the Bears. Just when it seemed that the Rattlers were poised to take their first lead of the game, Coulter provided the relief Mercer needed to come away with an early-season road win.
