Mercer puts up 21-0 shutout victory at home
MACON, Ga. – Everything clicked for Mercer as it put up three touchdowns worth of runs in a 21-0 victory over Alabama A&M on Friday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
The Bears (4-1) used a stellar start on the mound by Sawyer Gipson-Long (2-0), who struck out seven over six innings while the bats tallied 19 hits, including four home runs against Alabama A&M (0-7).
Â
It was a 7-0 game by the end of the second after Mercer's bats gave Gipson-Long an early cushion. Mercer's first three batters reached with hits in the opening inning, including Garrett Wilkinson and RJ Yeager, who tallied RBIs on a double and single. Freshmen Leyton Pinckney and Angelo DiSpigna joined the attack later in the inning with RBIs of their own. Zach Miller and Yeager broke the game open in the second with home runs, making it a 7-0 advantage.
Â
Wilkinson and DiSpigna hit the Bears' third and fourth home runs of the night in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to extend their lead to 10 runs. The onslaught continued in the seventh when Mercer sent 14 batters to the plate and added nine more runs, highlighted by RBI hits from Pinckney, Alex Crotty, Miller and Kyle Dockus.
Â
Three Mercer relievers – Josh Farmer, Andrew Kane and Kyle Bialousz – handled the rest, allowing just three hits while fanning three Bulldogs over the final three innings.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"Tonight was a night where everything went our way," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Sawyer [Gipson-Long] was really good on the mound once again and was backed by three solid innings of relief from a few guys.
Â
"A lot of our guys are starting to put together good offensive games for us. [Kyle] Dockus, [Garrett] Wilkinson, RJ [Yeager], Leyton [Pinckney], [Angelo] DiSpigna, [Zach] Miller…I could go on about how many guys put in a great effort for us tonight. It was a good start to the weekend and we'll be ready to go on Saturday."
