Mercer Rolls Past Florida A&M in 16-3 Win
2/26/2019 10:49:00 PM | Baseball
Bears put up 18 hits in seventh win of the year
The Bears (7-1) were led by standout individual hitting performances from Kyle Dockus (5-for-7, four RBI) and Angelo DiSpigna (4-for-6) in the 13-run victory. Jackson Kelley picked up his first collegiate win with 1.2 innings pitched in relief after starter Beau Healy went four frames while allowing three runs, two of which were earned.
Mercer scored five and seven runs in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, to pull away from the Rattlers (2-8), who owned an early 3-1 advantage through 3.5 innings. After both teams traded blows in over the first two innings, Healy ran into trouble in the top of the fourth when he walked the leadoff batter and gave up a two-run home run to Brad Hession.
It was all Bears from that point on, starting in the home half of the fourth. A two-RBI single by Dockus tied the game and a three-run home run by Garrett Wilkinson put Mercer ahead for good. A pair of two-RBI doubles by Collin Price and Dockus sparked Mercer's seven-run sixth inning. Jordan Ammons provided the final blow of the game with a two-run home run, his first this season and second of his career.
Scott Smith, Taylor Lobus and Andrew Kane joined Kelley out of the bullpen. The quartet surrendered just two hits and did not allow a run to the Rattlers over the final five innings.
Coach Gibson's Take
"It was a big offensive performance by our team but I thought pitching was outstanding once again tonight, led by Beau Healy in his second start," said head coach Craig Gibson. "The bullpen didn't allow a run and was stout over the final five innings. It was just one of those nights when we were able to get away from them, but we expect [Florida A&M] to be much better on Wednesday."
Player of the Game
Kyle Dockus extended his hit streak to four games with a career night in the leadoff slot. The redshirt junior tallied a career-high five hits and four runs batted in to lead Mercer's 18-hit night. After starting the game 0-for-2, Dockus recorded hits in five straight at bats.
