Bears Claim Home Opener Victory in Thrilling Fashion
MACON, Ga. – Mercer's women's tennis team fought back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Alabama State 4-1 Sunday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. It was the Bears' home opener and improved the team's record to 2-6 on the season.
Mercer fell behind early after dropping the doubles point to Alabama State. The Hornets won two of three of the doubles matches, with Mercer's Maeva Roquebert and Alara Hollyfield teaming up to defeat Lea Krajcovicova and Maria Popova 6-2 to claim the Bears' solo win at doubles.
Mercer came roaring back to sweep four consecutive singles matches to secure the win. Roquebert defeated Krajcovicova 6-2, 6-4; while Hollyfield bested Urska Velec 6-4, 6-1. Mercer's Celine Schepers beat Popova 6-2, 7-6 and Katie Sidor knocked off Reka Szentes 6-0, 6-4.Â
