Mercer salvages the series with 10-3 win
Â
Andrew Kane, Kevin Coulter and Nick Spear limited the visiting Bearcats (6-7) to three runs on nine hits and Mercer (11-10) jumped ahead early to avoid a series sweep. Kel Johnson (2-for-5) hit a home run for the third straight game and fourth time in five contests to lead Mercer's offensive push.
Â
Kane tossed three innings in his first career start on the mound and allowed one run on one hit. The redshirt junior left the game with a 4-1 lead after Garrett Wilkinson roped a two-run double in the second inning and Mercer added two more in the third with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and RBI single from Zach Miller.
Â
A two-run single in the top of the fifth by the Bearcats cut Mercer's lead to 4-3. Other than the fifth-inning trouble, Coulter (2-0) was effective over five frames en route to earning the win. The senior right-hander struck out three batters and allowed just two runs on six hits.
Â
A five-run sixth inning extended Mercer's lead to 9-3. Alex Crotty and David Posas doubled and tripled in consecutive at bats and RJ Yeager added a RBI single before Johnson blasted a two-run home run to right-center. Angelo DiSpigna added a solo home run in the eighth.

Coach Gibson's Take
"It feels really good that we were able to win on Sunday," said head coach Craig Gibson. "I'm disappointed that we couldn't do the same on Friday and Saturday, but this is a work in progress with the group we have.
Â
"I think we made good adjustments today and pitched really well; Andrew Kane got us off to a good start and Kevin Coulter and Nick Spear backed him up. Those three guys are upperclassmen and we needed them today."
