Mercer Extends SoCon Streak in Regular Season Finale

Bears defeat Wofford, 65-59, on Senior Day
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's basketball team defeated Wofford, 65-59, on Senior Day at Hawkins Arena to go undefeated in Southern Conference regular season play for the second consecutive year.

Mercer (22-7, 14-0 SoCon) won its 34th straight SoCon regular season contest in the process before honoring its five-woman senior class on the court with a postgame ceremony. Wofford fell to 15-14 and 7-7 in league play.

The Bears' play in the paint proved to be pivotal as they outscored Wofford, 38-26, in the category.

Player of the Game
KeKe Calloway scored 11 of her team-high 20 points in the first half to keep the Bears within striking distance late. The senior logged seven field goals on the day and filled up the box score with seven assists, five rebounds and one steal.

How It Happened
Calloway hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Mercer a slim 12-11 edge at the end of the first quarter. With Mercer trailing 9-4 in the frame, Calloway scored five of Mercer's final eight points while Ally Welch chipped in a jumper to lead the rally. It was Calloway again who led the Bears with their first six points of the second quarter, but Mercer found itself trailing 26-22 at halftime. Wofford scored the final nine points in the opening half.

It was a different story in the second half for Mercer offensively. The Bears, who shot 35 percent over the first 20 minutes, hit 17 field goals on 53-percent shooting in the second half. Amanda Thompson (10) and Shannon Titus (11) scored in double figures in the second half.

Mercer tied the game and then took the lead, 36-33, on two straight three-pointers by Calloway and Linnea Rosendal with 4:50 left in the third quarter. The two teams would trade blows throughout the remainder of the third quarter before Mercer took a 42-41 lead into the final frame.Â

Titus willed Mercer to its 22nd win, scoring all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter. Trailing 50-48, Mercer took its final lead of the game with a jumper from Titus and three-pointer by Rosendal. The Bears hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Wofford has a really good team and they kept coming at us, but I'm proud of our team and thankful for our crowd – they were so loud throughout.
