Mercer drops 5-3 SoCon contest to visiting Spartans
MACON, Ga. – Mercer was unable to capitalize on a strong start from left-hander Tanner Hall and fell to visiting UNCG, 5-3, in a Southern Conference series finale at OrthoGeorgia Park on Sunday afternoon.
Â
UNCG (15-7, 2-1 SoCon) took the league-opening series with the rubber-match win while the Bears (12-13, 1-2) stumbled in their fourth straight weekend series. Hall allowed two runs on two hits over four innings pitched and left the contest with a 3-1 advantage in the top of the fifth. The Spartans plated three runs in that frame to take a 4-3 lead that they would never give up.
Â
Despite a shaky first inning that saw UNCG score once on two hits, Hall was effective on the mound for Mercer. The junior retired 10 consecutive batters at one point and struck out four while walking one.
Â
Mercer's bats provided early run support with two in the first and one in the third. Kyle Dockus and RJ Yeager scored on sacrifice flies by Kel Johnson and Angelo DiSpigna after singling and doubling, respectively, in the first inning. The Bears added a third run in the third when Zach Miller scored on a throwing error after reaching with a leadoff single and stealing second base. Mercer did not get a runner past second base after the third inning.
Â
Hall was relieved by Nick Spear in the fifth after walking the leadoff batter. Spear allowed the runner to score after throwing two wild pitches and giving up a RBI double to center field. A RBI single by UNCG's Caleb Webster two at bats later against Mercer freshman Holton McGaha tied the game at 3-3. McGaha tossed Mercer's third wild pitch of the inning to advance Webster, who later scored on a RBI groundout to second base and gave UNCG the lead.
Â
The Spartans added one more run in the eighth on a solo home run. Seven total Mercer pitchers saw action on the mound. McGaha (0-1) took the loss.
