Mercer Drops In-State Contest to Georgia Southern

Bears defeated, 7-3, at home on Tuesday
MACON, Ga. – Mercer graduate senior Kel Johnson hit his 13th home run of the season as the Bears fell to visiting Georgia Southern, 7-3, on Tuesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
The Eagles (13-11) scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and eventually take the season series from Mercer (12-14). Johnson's home run was a two-run blast that gave Mercer a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Georgia Southern rallied.
Â
Right-hander Andrew Kane made his second career start on the mound for the Bears, tossing 1.2 innings before he was relieved by Kyle Bialousz. Kane tossed a scoreless first frame, stranding two runners in scoring position, but faced similar trouble in the second inning before he was relieved. Despite allowing the tying run in the third, Bialousz was effective over 3.1 innings pitched.
Â
A solo home run by Georgia Southern's Matt Anderson in the sixth inning off Jackson Kelley gave the Eagles a 3-2 advantage. They would plate two more runs in the frame. Mercer cut into the Eagles' lead in the bottom of the seventh when Collin Price scored on a RBI groundout by Kyle Dockus after reaching on an infield single.
Â
Georgia Southern added two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings via solo home runs.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"I thought we played well; you have to tip your cap to [Georgia Southern starting pitcher Tyler] Owens…he's that good," Craig Gibson said. "They've done a great job developing him in the mid-week. We were much better against him tonight than we were earlier in the season.
Â
"We had some guys play well, including Kyle Bialousz, who I thought was outstanding. It was really good to see Will Bowdoin compete tonight. We have to keep going at it and get back into league play on Friday night."
