Beau Healy tosses six strong innings in 4-1 loss to Terriers
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer left-hander Beau Healy tossed six strong innings on the mound but the Bears were defeated, 4-1, by Wofford in a Southern Conference series opener at Russell C. King Field on Friday.
Â
The Terriers (18-10, 1-0 SoCon) were led by a complete-game effort from Austin Higginbotham, who allowed just one run while striking out 11 batters. Mercer (12-15, 1-3) plated its lone run in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Collin Price.
Â
Healy (2-2) hung with Higginbotham through six innings, but left the contest with Mercer trailing, 3-1. After the Bears took their 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Wofford responded with one of its own in the home half. The Terriers then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double and throwing error by Mercer.
Â
Healy's final line included six innings pitched, three strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs allowed on six hits. Nick Spear threw the final two frames in relief; a solo home run in the eighth was the only hit he gave up.
Â
Mercer left six runners on base in the contest. The best scoring threat of the night came in the top of the eighth when the Bears loaded the bases with one out and Kel Johnson at bat. Zach Miller doubled and was followed by a single from Kyle Dockus (2-for-3) before RJ Yeager reached on a fielding error. Mercer could not capitalize, however, as Johnson went down swinging and Price flew out to left field.
