Bill Knight hits first collegiate home run in 11-2 loss
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Bill Knight hit his first collegiate home run in a two-hit effort as Mercer fell to Wofford, 11-2, in a Southern Conference contest at Russell C. King Field on Saturday afternoon.
Wofford (19-10, 2-0 SoCon) clinched the weekend series with the victory while Mercer dropped to 12-16 overall and 1-4 in league play. A pair of four-run innings by the Terriers helped separate them from Mercer, which tallied seven hits but left five on base.
Kevin Coulter (3-1) took the loss after tossing 6.1 innings in his third start of the season. After a 1-2-3 first frame, Coulter was tagged for four runs on five hits in the second inning as Wofford jumped out to an early lead. The senior settled in after that, holding the Terriers scoreless in the third through sixth innings.
Mercer pulled within three runs (4-1) when Knight hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth. The momentum would not carry far, unfortunately, as Wofford tacked on seven runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Kyle Bialousz and Will Bowdoin both came on in relief of Coulter in the seventh.
The Bears added their second run of the game in the eighth on a RBI double by Kel Johnson.
