Bears tally 16 hits in 14-11 win over Georgia State

The Bears (9-4) led 11-3 after a two-run double by RJ Yeager in the bottom of the fifth, but Georgia State (3-9) would plate eight runs over the final four innings, including three in the ninth to provide a scare. Beau Healy (2-0) scattered three runs on six hits and fanned six batters over five innings while earning the win on the mound.

Georgia State struck first with one run in each of the second and third innings. Mercer tied it up in the third with a sacrifice fly by Yeager and Kyle Dockus scoring on a wild pitch. Collin Price broke the tie with a three-run home run to left-center, giving Mercer a 5-2 lead entering the fourth frame. The fireworks continued in the fourth as Garrett Wilkinson left the yard on a three-run home run of his own.

Despite a two-run single by Angelo DiSpigna in the sixth and an unearned run in the eighth when Zach Miller scored on an error in left field, the Bears' bullpen had to work around adversity to put away the Panthers. A solo home run and two-run double in the seventh off of Ben Brock brought Georgia State within five runs. The Panthers then tallied four consecutive hits in the ninth before Mercer turned to Nick Spear, who recorded a pair of outs with the bases loaded for his first save this season.

Coach Gibson's Take
"It was a good way to earn a mid-week win after not being very offensive last weekend on the road," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We had a lot of guys contribute at the plate in various ways and we were able to bunch hits together. Nick Spear was really good at the end too in a tough spot.

"Hopefully this will jump start a full week for our team with five games remaining. We'll look to keep the rhythm rolling in our trip to Statesboro on Wednesday and our home series this weekend."

Zach Miller went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three stolen bases out of the nine-hole in the lineup. The sophomore reached base four times, tallying three hits – two doubles – and one walk.
