Kevin Coulter tosses seven frames in 4-3 loss
MACON, Ga. – Senior right-hander Kevin Coulter allowed just one earned run over seven innings pitched in a 4-3 Southern Conference loss to Western Carolina at OrthoGeorgia Park on Friday night.

Coulter, who took the loss and moved to 3-2 on the mound, scattered 11 hits and struck out six batters, but a costly third-inning throwing error behind him gave way to a three-run frame for the Catamounts (15-15, 4-6 SoCon). Mercer (15-19, 4-6 SoCon) mustered just seven hits, including two in the second through sixth innings.

Kel Johnson earned Mercer a one-run lead in the bottom of the first with a RBI double off the left-center wall that scored Kyle Dockus from first base. The Catamounts struck with four runs over the next two frames, including three in the third after RJ Yeager committed a throwing error that later extended a three-hit inning.

Coulter settled in over the final four innings of his outing, holding Western Carolina scoreless over that period. He was relieved by Will Bowdoin and Sawyer Gipson-Long, the latter of which tossed 1.2 innings.

Mercer strung together a pair of hits in the seventh, including a solo home run by Zach Miller and a RBI double by Bill Knight, to pull within one run of the Catamounts. However, with the tying run in scoring position with one out, Mercer left Knight stranded in the seventh.
