Mercer men’s basketball adds third new face in last two days
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball team added its third new face in the last 24 hours as head coach Greg Gary announced that Fairfield University transfer Neftali Alvarez has joined the Bears on Thursday.
Â
Alvarez, a 6-foot, 2-inch guard of Cantano, P.R., submitted his scholarship paperwork late Wednesday, officially completing his transfer from Fairfield to Mercer. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
Â
As a freshman at Fairfield, Alvarez averaged 11.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 32 minutes per game. He was one of five players in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) to earn All-Rookie team honors.
Â
"Neftali has great speed and the ability to get to the rim, all while making those around him better when he is on the court," Gary said. "He's a tremendous competitor and a great addition to our program."
Â
Prior to signing with Fairfield, Alvarez starred for Miami Christian School (Miami, Fla.) under current Mercer assistant coach, Juan Cardona. During his time in Miami, Alvarez helped the Victors win two 5A-1A state championships; he netted a game-winning three-pointer as a junior to win one of those two titles. Alvarez averaged a double-double as a senior (27 points, 11 assists) en route to earning 5A-1A Player of the Year accolades.
