Bears defeat Furman, 15-14, in double-overtime thriller
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Hailey Rhatigan scored her eighth goal of the match in double overtime to help top-seeded Mercer defeat No. 3 Furman, 15-14, in the 2019 Southern Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship at Paladin Stadium on Saturday.
Â
The Bears (10-9) won their second consecutive SoCon Championship and punched their ticket to the 2019 NCAA Tournament, via an automatic bid. Mercer has defeated Furman (11-8) in each of the 2018 and 2019 title matches.
Â
Rhatigan's eight goals set a new SoCon single-match record. Her game-winner came off an assist from Catie Snee with one minute and 40 seconds remaining in the second sudden-death overtime period. The two teams went scoreless in the first overtime period after ending regulation tied, 14-14.
Â
It was the Rhatigan show for Mercer in the first half. The freshman attacker scored seven of the Bears' eight goals, including their first three and the go-ahead score with 38 seconds remaining before halftime. Four of her goals were on free-position shots. Iseabal Cryne tallied six saves against the Furman offense in the first half.
Â
Kelly Hagerty broke an 11-11 tie with her first goal of the match at the 8:13-mark of the second half. It was the first goal for either team in over 12 minutes of play. Furman quickly tied the match less than one minute later, only to see Hagerty respond with another unassisted goal at the 6:56-mark, regaining the lead for Mercer. Hagerty came up big once again, scored her third consecutive goal for the Bears to build a 14-12 advantage.
Â
Furman scored the final two goals of regulation to force overtime. Mercer had a free-position shot opportunity at the end of regulation, but Lily Morin's shot was saved as time expired. The Bears' defense allowed just one shot by Furman in overtime and caused two turnovers, including a pair by Audrey Robertson.
