Bears chosen as the preseason favorites by league officials
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time since joining the league, Mercer men's soccer has been picked to win the Southern Conference in the preseason polls, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Bears, who have won SoCon regular season or tournament titles in four of the last five years, received five of the conference's seven first-place votes – edging out 2018 SoCon tournament champion Furman for the top spot.
2018 SoCon Player of the Year and 2019 Preseason All-American Trevor Martineau was one of three Bears on the league's preseason XI. Joining Martineau on the list were senior midfielder Roberto Arteaga and junior defender Joshua Harrison – Arteaga was an All-SoCon first teamer last year and Harrison was chosen to the second team.
Led by reigning SoCon Coach of the Year Brad Ruzzo, Mercer will travel to Nashville this weekend for one final preseason tune-up against Bradley. The regular season kicks-off on Aug. 30 at Cincinnati and the first home match of the year is set for Sep. 2 against Presbyterian.
