Mercer Women’s Soccer Defeats Alabama State

Bears win seventh straight with 4-3 victory
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory over Alabama State at Betts Stadium. With the win, the Bears improve to 8-1-0 on the season. Mercer outshot the Hornets, 24-10, in the match. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears found themselves down early as Mercer was called for a handball in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick for the Hornets. Mckenna Lupori took the kick and scored putting Alabama State ahead, 1-0. The game remained 1-0 until the 36th minute. Mercer was attacking and got the Hornets to commit a foul in the box. Hayley Moore took the PK and scored tying the game at 1-1.

Three minutes later, the Bears took the lead 2-1, after Moore juked out a defender and sent a cross into the box that Nicole Icen headed home putting the Bears ahead 2-1, which would be the halftime score.

Mercer continued to lead 2-1 late into the second half. The Hornets scored the tying goal of the game at 2-2 in the 77th minute. The game did not stay tied long as in the 79th minute, Sarah Adcock scored putting Mercer back on top, 3-2. Just over a minute later, Icen found Pace Stephenson for a fourth goal for the Bears and grew the lead to 4-2. Alabama State added one goal late and Mercer won the match, 4-3.

The Bears return to action on Friday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Lexington, Va. to play VMI. This will be the first SoCon match of the year for the Bears. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. from Patchin Field. Â
