The game was scheduled to take place Thursday night at Elon
MACON, Ga. – The men's basketball contest between Mercer and the Elon Phoenix, scheduled for Thursday night at Elon, has been canceled after the Phoenix announced a pause in all men's basketball related activities.
On Tuesday, Elon followed guidelines from the Center for Disease and Control, the NCAA and local health officials and entered a 14-day quarantine after being notified of a positive test result from a Tier 1 individual who was tested Monday.
Mercer stands 3-0 on the young season for its best start since the 2015-16 campaign. Each of the Bears' three wins have come by double-digits, and the Orange & Black are currently receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Poll. The Bears knocked the sixth-ranked team in the poll, Georgia State, 86-69, inside Hawkins Arena on Monday night.
Over thanksgiving week, the Bears picked up their first win over a Power Five school since Dec. 2015 when they left Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion with an 83-73 triumph. In the Nov. 25 season opener, Mercer topped North Georgia, 79-48.
Neftali Alvarez, who received Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week Presented by GEICO honors Monday afternoon, leads with Bears with averages of 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.
