The 1991-92 Bears earned the program’s 10th conference championship by winning the TAAC regular season title
MACON, Ga. – As part of its 50 Years of Mercer Basketball celebration, the women's basketball team is recognizing some of the all-time great teams to ever don the Orange and Black.
Â
Throughout the 2020-21 season, Mercer women's basketball is going to highlight a different decade each month from October to February for their accomplishments and the impact they made on the program.
Â
After capturing its first conference title in nine years in the 1990-91 campaign, Mercer wasted no time in picking up another one. The 1991-92 Bears (20-8, 10-2) earned a share of the regular season crown in their first season in the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC). This marked the program's 10th total conference title and the fifth regular season championship.
Â
The Bears were led by the nation's leading scorer, Andrea Congreaves, as she earned her second straight conference player of the year honor. The junior center had the best season of scoring in program history, setting single season records for total points (925), points per game (33.0), field goals made (353) and 3-pointers made (77).
Â
Congreaves and Christie Agee were a lethal duo from beyond-the-arc, posting the two-highest 3-point percentages in program history. Agee's 41.7 percent (58-of-139) on threes edged out Congreaves (77-of-185) for the top spot in Mercer's record book. Stephanie Raines added experience at the point as the senior dished out a career-high 223 assists in her final season at Mercer for the third-most in program history at the time.
Â
Mercer struggled at the start of the season, opening with just two wins through the first six games. That quickly changed, however, as a 71-56 win over Marshall on New Year's Eve propelled the Bears to 16 wins over their next 17 games. The Orange and Black followed up the win over Marshall with seven more victories, including opening conference play with a 3-0 record. The Bears defeated Georgia Southern, Florida A&M and Stetson in TAAC play before falling to Southeastern Louisiana on the road. The setback against Southeastern Louisiana was but a minor inconvenience for the Bears, however, as they rattled off eight more victories in a row with five coming against TAAC opponents. Mercer clinched a share of the regular season title with a win over Georgia State in the regular season finale. Second-year head coach Lea Henry earned her second Coach of the Year accolades after leading the Bears to a 38-17 record through her first two season.
