Andrea Congreaves’ #3 is retired by the Bears
MACON, Ga. – As part of its 50 Years of Mercer Basketball celebration, the women's basketball team is recognizing a member of the program who had her jersey retired: Andrea Congreaves.
Â
Throughout the 2020-21 season, Mercer women's basketball is going to highlight a different decade each month from October to February for their accomplishments and the impact they made on the program.
Â
Congreaves re-wrote the Mercer record book during her stellar four-year career. She was a three-time Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, a feat that no one else in conference history has been able to achieve, as well as being a member of the 1993 Kodak All-America team as one of the 10 best players in the country.
Â
During her tenure, the Bears won back-to-back regular season conference championships in 1990-91 and 1991-92. Congreaves led the nation in scoring in 1991-92 (33.0 ppg) and again in 1992-93 (31.0 ppg). Her incredible junior season included a program-record 925 points, a 58.3 field goal percentage (353-of-606), 11.6 rebounds per game and 77 made 3-pointers that stood as the program record until KeKe Calloway made 99 treys in 2017-18.
Â
Congreaves remains one of the most prolific scorers to ever come through Mercer. She remains the program's leading all-time scorer with 2,796 points, while also holding program records in career field goals made (1,107) and field goal percentage (58.0). Congreaves also ranks second in scoring average (25.9 ppg), third in free throws made (429), rebounds (1,141) and rebounds per game (10.6 rpg), fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (36.6), free throw attempts (570) and field goal attempts (1,190), sixth in steals (203) and blocks (83), seven it 3-pointers made (153) and attempted (418) and eighth in free throw percentage (75.3).
Â
After wrapping up a sensational collegiate career, Congreaves was drafted by the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA in 1997 where she played for two years before going to the Orlando Miracle in 1999. Congreaves then headed overseas to continue her career, spending a total of 13 years playing professionally.
