The Bears lost by a 4-3 score for the second straight contest

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 defeat for the second consecutive match, falling to the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday.

Mercer managed to win the doubles point, coming from behind to take the 1-0 lead. After Maeva Roquebert and Mary Courville fell in the No. 1 position, Marie Mottet and Lauren Rich defeated Denisha Gheorghe and Damira Muminovic, 6-2. Alara Hollyfield and Anna Sovic clinched the point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Angel Carney and Alexia Alvarez.

In singles play, Sovic quickly extended the Bears' lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gheorghe at No. 6.

Georgia State made it a 2-1 contest when Andrea Stanescu defeated Mottet at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. The Panthers took the lead when Chivu won in the No. 1 position. Roquebert fell behind after the first set, but rallied to win the second set, 7-5, and force a third. Roquebert was unable to take the match, as he fell by a 6-2 score.

With the match tied at two, Hollyfield battled for three sets at No. 2 but was defeated, 6-0, 1-6, 5-7.

Trailing 3-2, Mercer's Courville tied the match with impressive play in the No. 4 flight. She battled for the come-from-behind win in three sets. After dropping the opening set, she won the final two sets, 7-5 and 6-4 respectively.

The Panthers clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3.

The loss drops Mercer to 3-8 on the year while the Panthers improve to 5-8.
