Will Betts was a two-time ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ATLANTA – Former Mercer men's soccer player Will Betts was voted the ASUN Player of the Decade on Monday afternoon, the league office announced.
Of the 26 players named to the conference's All-Decade Team, the fans voted on who would be named the Player of the Decade on Facebook by "Liking" the photo they felt deserved the award. Betts received a total of 249 votes, while fellow Mercer Bear Josh Shutter earned the second-most votes with 208.
Betts, who played for the Bears from 2009-12, is the only player in ASUN men's soccer history to earn back-to-back Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in 2011 and 2012. The Brenham, Texas native started in 74 matches throughout his career, the seventh-most in ASUN history. He totaled 32 points in his career on 12 goals and eight assists and led the team in points as a junior with 12 on five goals and two assists. Â
Mercer accumulated a 37-32-8 record over Betts' four-year career, including two ASUN Championship finals appearances in 2009 and 2012. The Bears made a late run in 2009 as the 5-seed in the tournament, defeating #4 North Florida, 3-0, with Betts adding an insurance tally in the 59th minute. He then assisted on the game-tying goal of Mercer's 3-1 upset of top-seeded Campbell to earn a berth to the championship match for the first time since 2004.
