Ian Cameron was promoted to head coach of Tormenta FC’s top club
STATESBORO, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer alum Ian Cameron was promoted to head coach of Tormenta FC's USL League One team, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.
"I'm privileged to have the opportunity to lead Tormenta FC on and off the field," Cameron remarked. "The lessons learned as a student-athlete at Mercer University have always set me on my professional path. Under the tutelage of Coach Ruzzo I cut my teeth not only as a player but also as a young coach. Many Mercer players have represented Tormenta FC at the USL1 and USL2 levels, and now it's exciting to continue that connection into the future."
Cameron had two stints with the Bears, first as a player from 2007-10 and again as an assistant coach from 2013-15. He appeared in 67 games with the Orange and Black and still ranks in the top-10 in program history in points (T-10th – 50) and assists (T-7th – 16). As a junior, he led the Bears to the ASUN Championship match as the No. 5 seed.
The crafty midfielder also racked up plenty of awards while playing at Mercer, earning a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region third team selection, a pair of Atlantic Sun All-Conference selections, an ASUN All-Freshman Team nod and an ASUN All-Tournament Team nomination.
A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Cameron graduated from Mercer in 2011 with a double major degree in Finance/Economics and earned a master's degree in quantitative finance from the University of Glasgow in 2012.
Upon his return to Macon, Cameron worked as the program's first full time assistant coach under head men's soccer coach Brad Ruzzo. He instructed the 2014 ASUN Freshman of the Year, and eventual MLS Super Draftee, Will Bagrou in his second season with the program. The 2014 Bears posted a 14-7-0 record en route to their first-ever SoCon Regular Season title while setting a program record for wins in a season. Mercer produced its second-consecutive double-digit win season the following year while also advancing to the SoCon semifinals. The Bears' boasted a potent offense in 2015, ranking second in the conference in total points and 32nd nationally with 100 points.
After Mercer, Cameron took his first head coaching gig at Eckerd College in 2016. In his first season with the Tritons, he led the team to an 8-6-3 record and an appearance in the Sunshine State Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2012.
Cameron joined Tormenta FC in 2019, his final season at Eckerd, as the club's USL Two Head Coach and an assistant for the USL One team. He led Tormenta FC 2 to a Southern Conference championship and the League Two Semifinals in his first season with the club, the longest playoff run in club history.
"Congratulations to Ian Cameron who will now take on the role of Head Coach for our USL League One team," Tormenta FC Owner and President Darin Van Tassell said. "John [Miglarese] brought Ian to our franchise to ensure that as the franchise grew -- and his role would evolve -- that our top team would always have a great coach. Ian Cameron is that coach, leader and winner. We look forward to his success and winning championships as he oversees the development of our teams in League One and League Two."
