Mercer to meet Wake Forest in opening round
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team will face Wake Forest in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday November 18 at in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at a time that is to be determined.
This is the sixth appearance in the annual invitational tournament, and fourth since joining the Southern Conference in 2014. Mercer fell to Charlotte in the opening round of the competition in 2019, which was also the most recent appearance. With a win in the opening round, it would be the first-ever NCAA tournament win in program history.
Dylan Gaither has led the offense with 13 goals and five assists, while Trevor McMullen has tallied an 8-4 record and stopped 52 shots in 13 matches in goal for the Bears.
Mercer clinched the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by virtue of winning the conference tournament on Sunday when they defeated Belmont in a 4-3 thriller.
The Bears are 10-7-1 with a 4-1-1 mark in league play. Including SoCon tournament play, Mercer won seven of their final nine matches to clinch the spot in the tournament.
