MACON, Ga. – Basketball season is upon us, and the Mercer Bears will start the 2021-22 by hosting an Exhibition Match against in-state opponent FVSU. The Bears and Wildcats have not met in their program history. FVSU, an NCAA Division II member, competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This is the season opener for both teams.

SERIES HISTORY
This is the first meeting between these two teams. Mercer and Fort Valley State are tied, 0-0. The two teams have not met in their series history. Greg Gary has never faced FVSU.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
FVSU enters its second season with head coach Mark Sherrill at the helm. Fort Valley State went 7-22 overall and 5-11 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season. FVSU with a fresh new roster looks to make a significant impact in their conference this year. The Wildcats are returning back to play as they did not compete last year's 20-21 season. Remarkably, this is one of ten scheduled games in November for Fort Valley State University.
MERCER VS. IN-STATE FOES
Mercer will face-off against in-state opponents for the first time. The Bears all-time record against these in-state opponent is 0-0. The Bears begin by battling FVSU on Wednesday before taking on Kennesaw State (Dec 1), Georgia State (Dec. 4), and Georgia Southern (Dec. 11).
MERCER IN PAST SEASON OPENERS
In the past five seasons, Mercer has won four of the last six season openers. From the 2015-2018 season, the Bears won their season openers. In 2015, Mercer defeated Allen 96-70 in Hawkins Arena. The following season, the Black and Orange skated their way to a victory with an 87-53 win over Brewton-Parker. Mercer has lost the last three season openers - at UCF in Nov. 2017, at UAB the following season and the season after that at St. John's. Most recently, they defeated North Georgia last November.
