Mercer escaped Tennessee State in overtime by a 71-70 margin. The host Lady Tigers overcame a 40-21 halftime deficit to force the extra period. Jaron Dougherty's 18 points and five assists led the Mercer offense on Sunday.
Series History
The Bears and Knights will face off for the 45th time in Hawkins Arena, with the visitors from Orlando holding the 27-17 series lead. UCF took the last meeting, a 76-42 decision in Macon in November 2018.
New Season, New Bears
There will be plenty of new faces at Hawkins Arena for the 2021-22 season, as Mercer welcomes eight new student-athletes – Kinley Fisher, Endia Banks, Erin Houpt, Erin Gutierrez, Kassidy Jones, Nigeria Harkless, Ashlee Locke and Lauren McNamara-Clement – to campus.
Scouting the Knights
UCF enters the matchup with Mercer with a 6-1 mark and winners of their last five. Their sole blemish was an eight-point set back at the hands of Tennessee in their second game of the season. Three of their wins – at Virginia, vs. USC and Arkansas – were against power conference foes. Diamond Battles – a senior guard – leads or holds a share of the team lead in points per game, 3 pointers made per game, free throw percentage, points, assists and steals.
