Mercer Football Travels to Wofford Saturday

The Bears kickoff spring football Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Football team opens its spring schedule on Saturday when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford College in Southern Conference action. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Gibbs Stadium.

SCOUTING WOFFORD
The Terriers of Wofford College are set to open the 2020-21 season on Saturday at Gibbs Field. This will be the first game played by the Terriers in the month of February in school history. Last season, the Terriers finished the season 8-4 and 7-1 in SoCon play and won the SoCon league title for the seventh time in school history.

Wofford looks to replace the 2019 SoCon Player of the Year Joe Newman at quarterback. Jimmy Weirick and Peyton Derrick both played in three games last season.

In the backfield, Jacquez Allen returns to the Terriers. He rushed for 52 times for 528 yards during the 2019 season. Also returning as a running back is Nathan Walker, who had 81 carries for 460 yards and five touchdowns. The top two receivers from last season return for Wofford this year in D'mauriae VanCleave and T.J. Luther.

On the defensive side of the ball, Joe Beckett and John Beckley are the top two returning tacklers with 50 and 46, respectively. Also returning for Wofford is Micheal Mason led the team with 10.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

Quick Hits
- Mercer is looking for its first win of the 2020-21 season and first since Nov. 2, 2019. The last win for Mercer came against Samford in triple overtime, 36-33. Caleb Dowden hit the game-winning field goal in the third overtime to give the Bears the win. The Orange and Black have lost five straight games.
- The Bears were picked to finish tied for sixth as voted on by the Southern Conference Coaches on Football Media day.
- During the Bears last contest, sophomore Lance Wise made a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball. He tallied a career-high 20 tackles, which was one shy of tying the school record set by Sidney Otiwu during the 2019 season.
- True freshman Isaac Dowling has made a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball for the Bears during the fall. He averaged 13.3 tackles per game over three games to lead the FCS.
- The Bears are in unique opportunity this season. This will be the first game Mercer has played in the spring since 1892.
- Redshirt sophomore Deondre Johnson does it all for the Bears. Over three games, Johnson is averaging 106.0 all-purpose yards per game. He has tallied 128 yards on kick returns, 129 receiving yards and 61 rushing yards. Johnson leads the Southern Conference in all-purpose yards and ranks 11th in the FCS.
