MACON, Ga. – Mercer Women's Basketball Head Coach Susie Gardner announced the addition of graduate transfer Erin Gutierrez to her 2020-21 recruiting class.
Erin Gutierrez
Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Tulane
Guard
5-9
Gutierrez comes to Macon after spending the last three seasons as a member of the Tulane Green Wave. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native made an immediate impact as a freshman, playing in 29 of Tulane's 30 games during the 2018-19 season and averaging 19.8 minutes per game, the fourth-highest on the team. Her 39 steals were tied for the team lead, while she dished out the second-most assists on the team in her first collegiate season with 99. Gutierrez tallied a career-high 10 assists against UCF on Feb. 13 to become the first player at Tulane to record double-digit assists in a game in two years. This past season, Tulane made its ninth postseason appearance since 2009-10 by going to the WNIT.
Prior to Tulane, Gutierrez starred at Nova High School. As a senior, she led Nova to a 30-2 record and an appearance in the state championship game. A McDonald's All-American nominee, Gutierrez was named the BCAA Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Sun Sentinel Player of the Year after averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. She helped Nova win the BCAA Big 8 championship, as well as district and regional titles, and was named the Big 8 MVP. Gutierrez was a three-time First Team All-County performer and was rank the No. 138 recruit in the country on PrespectsNation.com.
In addition to her on-court success, Gutierrez also excels in the classroom. The 5-foot-9 point guard will complete her bachelor's degree from Tulane in three years. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and served as secretary for the student government in high school.
What Coach Gardner Likes about Erin
"We actually talked to Erin when she was coming out of high school before she ended up at Tulane. She is a good student and completed her undergraduate studies in three years. She's a dynamic point guard, and I remember thinking that she's going to be an outstanding college player after watching her play on the AAU circuit. After seeing Erin's name in the portal, we began the recruiting process where we left off three years ago. Erin remembered talking to me when she was in high school, and we just continued the conversation. Having already played for a good Tulane program, Erin knows what it takes to play Division I basketball, so we anticipate she will be ready to step on the court and produce immediately. Erin has been part of successful teams in the past, and she wants to win a championship while contributing at a high level and obtaining her MBA at another outstanding academic institution."
