Mercer finalizes coaching staff with addition of David Lowery
MACON, Ga. – Mercer Women's Basketball Head Coach Susie Gardner has finalized her coaching staff for the 2021-22 season with the hiring of Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator David Lowery on Friday morning.
Â
"I've known David for 14 years from when we worked together at the University of Florida," Gardner said. "David is exactly what I was looking for in terms of a recruiting coordinator. He is well respected and known in the women's basketball community. He has a great passion for the game, and our players will gravitate towards him not only as a basketball coach, but as someone who will teach them life skills as well. I'm just so thrilled to have someone who I really admire. I know he has a great work ethic and we will come to the office every day with an amazing staff, and I'm so excited I get to work with David again."
Â
Lowery joins the Bears' coaching staff with 16 years of coaching experience as one of the top recruiters in the state of Florida.
Â
"I am so thrilled to have an opportunity to be part of Coach Gardner's staff and the Mercer family," Lowery said. "I have always admired Coach Gardner and what she and the Mercer Women's Basketball program have accomplished. It gives me great pride and excitement to be part of a program with so many outstanding players and such a rich tradition within the Southern Conference as well as nationally, having won four regular season titles, three tournament titles and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. I am appreciative of the commitment Mercer has made to the student-athletes and its athletics programs. I am looking forward to serving the women's basketball players, coaches, Mercer University and the community of Macon."
Â
Lowery joins Mercer after coming off a championship run with Northwest Florida State College where the Raiders claimed the NJCAA national title after going 24-2 in 2020-21. After joining the NFSC staff in January, Lowery worked with the NJCAA Coach of the Year, Bart Walker, and coached Chanaya Pinto to NJCAA All-America honors. Pinto also garnered the World Exposure Report Sophomore of the Year honors, as well as being named a First Team All-American by the organization alongside teammate Last-Tear Poa, who was a Third Team All-American.
Prior to NFSC, Lowery served as the head coach at Florida State College at Jacksonville for the 2019-20 season after spending four years at the University of North Florida as the associate head coach. While at UNF, he helped recruit three ASUN Conference Newcomers of the Year and two ASUN All-Freshman Team members as the team reached the conference semifinals in back-to-back seasons.
Â
In his first season with the Ospreys, Lowery saw to development of Kadesia Johnson who improved her rebounding average by more than seven boards per game. He assisted with Maiya Rumph in becoming the team's second-best rebounder.Â
Â
Lowery came to UNF after spending eight years as an assistant coach at Florida. He coordinated the Gators' recruiting efforts and assisted with player development. Lowery brought 10 ESPN Top 100 recruits to Florida, including McDonald's All-American Ronni Williams.
Â
While at Florida, Lowery helped the Gators to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2009, 2012, 2014) and four WNIT appearances (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013) with the Gators reaching the WNIT Final Four in 2013.
Â
The coach of 21 All-Conference selections and six All-SEC Freshman Team honorees, Lowery has also served as an assistant coach at Charlotte and Davidson. With both teams, Lowery served as the recruiting coordinator and oversaw each team's academic progress. Additionally, in his two years at Charlotte (2005-07), Lowery helped the 49ers to the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship and trips to the 2006 and 2007 WNITs.
Â
Lowery has participated in multiple coaching forums, including the Nike Villa 7 Next Generation of Young Rising Head Coaches, the BCA ACA Program of Achieving Coaching Excellence, NACWAA White Board Coaches Consortium and the U.S. Marines Leadership Training Workshop. He has also presented at multiple conferences, including the WBCA's "So You Want To Be A Coach" program.
Â
Lowery graduated from Mississippi State in May 2000 with a bachelor of science in physical education. He is the proud father of Kendall Arvryzena Hightower and Carlon Reed Lowery.
