Hughes played at Houston County High School.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears added another key signee for the upcoming 2022 season in outfielder Treyson Hughes, head coach Craig Gibson announced on Tuesday.
Â
Hughes comes to Mercer from Houston County High School where he played three years of varsity baseball. Hughes and Hoco went out with a bang, capturing the 2021 Georgia High School Association 6A State Championship with a sweep of Lassiter, 2-1 and 4-0. The elusive state championship came after a pair of region titles in 2019 and 2021.
Â
Hughes, a 6-foot-4-inch, 170-lb outfielder, earned first team all-state and all-region honors in his final campaign and received first team all-region and second team all-state honors as a sophomore.
Â
Hughes played three seasons of travel baseball for Five Star National out of Warner Robins, Ga., and head coach Andy Burress. Five Star National won the USA National Baseball Championship and were led by the incoming Mercer signee. Hughes boasted better than a .400 average during his final two summers with Five Star.
Â
"Treyson is another key signee for us," remarked Gibson. "He has versatility to play multiple spots in the outfield and has hit for a high average in both his high school career and on the travel ball circuit. We're excited that he has chosen to be a Bear and can't wait to welcome him and rest of our newcomers to campus soon."
Â
Hughes was a Beta Club member at Houston County and plans to major in Sports Management. He is the son of Ray and Nicole Hughes and has two siblings, Reid and Chatham.
