Agard goal, McMullen shutout lead Mercer over Furman
MACON, Ga. -- In his first collegiate start, Trevor McMullen couldn't have asked for a better result. An 80th-minute strike from Kadeem Agard was the difference for Mercer in their 1-0 win over the visiting Furman Paladins.
The Mercer attack was pressing for the entire game, and finally broke the scoreless tie when Liam Coxhead and Angel Gonzalez fed Agard a pass from just outside the six-yard box for what ended up to be the match-winner with just over 10 minutes left in the match before extra time would've been needed. The Orange & Black fired off 11 shots, and nine of which were on target.
Right before time expired an offside on the Paladins (1-5, 0-1 SoCon) wiped off what would have been the equalizing goal to send it to an extra period.
Agard's 80th-minute score was his third of the young season, and has scored in three of the five he's participated in. His three conversions places him second on the squad behind Dylan Gaither, who has four to his name.
McMullen, the sophomore netminder from Decatur, Georgia, was a brick wall for the Bears (3-3, 1-0 SoCon) for the entire 90.
Week one's SoCon offensive player of the week, Gaither, added four shots, three being on target.
With the win, Mercer has now won four of the last five against Furman.
MU will venture out of conference for their next game, on September 21, when they travel to face South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Kickoff against the Gamecocks will be at 7 p.m.
