Bears defeat Alabama State in Straight Sets
STATESBORO, Ga.  – The Mercer Bears finish the Georgia Southern Tournament with a sweep victory over Alabama State.
"Feels good to get a win as we move towards being 100% healthy," said Head Coach Dex Schroeder. "Megan really solidified our serve receive today and Brittany did an amazing good on leadership."
MERCER VS. ALABAMA STATE
Set One (25-19)Â | The Bears started the first set trailing by three. Immediately after, the Bears went on a 5-0 run which included two kills from Taylor Lynch, a kill from Brittany Major and Rayanne de Oliveira, and a service ace from Lexi Uhrhan. This run would put the Bears up by two, 5-3. Lynch continued to work offensively, recording two additional kills to keep the Bears lead of two, 8-6. A few bad sets tied the game at eight with four tie scores following. On the offensive side, de Oliveira led with three kills and one service ace to put the Bears up by three, 17-14. Scoring runs of two and three, extend the Bears lead to six, 22-16. Kills from Jaida Howell, Morgan Verheyen, and Lynch allow the Bears to take set one, 25-19.
Set Two (25-21)Â | Two of Mercer's first five points included a service ace from de Oliveira and a kill from Major, giving the Bears a three-point lead, 5-2. Agnieska Paskevic recorded two points of her own, a kill and a service ace keeping the Bears on top, 10-6. Several errors allowed Mercer to maintain their lead. de Oliveira (one), Major and Lynch (two) helped offensively with kills and Howell recorded a solo block to give the Bears a lead of six. A 3-0 run from the Hornets would make it a three-point game (24-21) but a kill from Lynch closed the set.
Set Three (25-22)Â | Lynch scored the first two points for the Bears in the third set, 3-2 Hornets. Two kills each, from Major and Howell, would give the Bears a one-point lead, 7-6. The Bears and Hornets traded points resulting in five tie scores. Two separate 2-0 runs from the Hornets would give them a lead of three, 18-15. After a Mercer timeout, the Bears went on a 4-0 run with a kill from Lynch and service ace from de Oliveira, giving the Bears a one-point lead, 20-19. The Bears kept attacking which included a kill from Lynch, a block assist from Major and Howell and another kill from Major. These efforts would put the Bears up by three and Mercer would win the set off of a service error.
