McMullen posts second shutout in three tries
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – In the first road SoCon match of the season, the Mercer men's soccer team battled ETSU to a very physical, scoreless draw in the Volunteer State.
Reigning league defensive player of the week, Trevor McMullen, made key stops to keep the match scoreless and keep Mercer (3-4-1, 1-0-1 SoCon) undefeated in league play.
The match was the second-straight clean sheet in three chances for the sophomore keeper from Decatur, Georgia, adding to his one last week in the 1-0 win over Furman.
The host Buccaneers (2-3-2, 0-1-1 SoCon) pressed on the Mercer backline for the nearly the entire match, firing off 20 shots toward McMullen, including seven on net.
In McMullen's two clean sheets, he has saved a combined 13 shots in 200 minutes while between the pipes versus Furman and ETSU.
Michael Ille led the MU attack with three shots – one on goal, with Dylan Gaither following with a pair for himself. Forward, Kadeem Agard, also threatened with a shot on the ETSU keeper, Josh Perryman.
The Mercer defense held ETSU's Tarik Pannholzer in check for the entirety of the contest, keeping one of the league's leaders in points and goals off of the scoresheet.
Mercer will stay on the road and head out of conference when they will meet the Winthrop Eagles on Tuesday, September 28. Kickoff from Rock Hill, South Carolina is slated for 6 p.m. from Eagle Field. Following the matchup with Winthrop, they will continue league play versus UNCG in a week.
