Winthrop drops Bears in 3-1 contest
ROCK HILL, S.C. – In their third consecutive away match, the Mercer men's soccer team fell to the Winthrop Eagles on Tuesday evening in Rock Hill, South Carolina by a 3-1 scoreline.
The homestanding Eagles (3-3) used two first-half goals to pull away from Mercer (3-5-1) in the non-conference matchup.
Winthrop got on the board when Bryant Jimenez-Pearce buried a penalty kick past Trevor McMullen not even 10 minutes into the contest. 16 minutes later, Ethan Stevenson found the back of the net when he was assisted by Brigham Larsen for a 2-0 lead for the hosts.
In the second half, Winthrop tripled their lead Brigham Larsen was assisted by Ethan Stevenson in the 73rd minute for a 3-0 advantage, which put the contest firmly out of reach.
Two minutes later, Baba Agbaje won possession just inside the 18-yard box and sent the ball to Chad Eldridge, who struck a one-timer into the left corner of the net past the keeper to trim the Winthrop lead back down to two. The goal was the first one of Eldridge's career.
Sophomore keeper, Trevor McMullen, stopped two Winthrop shots. Kadeem Agard led the Mercer attack with five shots, and one of those saved by Winthrop's Sam Jones.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, October 2nd when they visit UNCG for their second SoCon road match. Kickoff from Greensboro is slated for 7 p.m.
