Bears Defeat the Paladins 3-0

Mercer picks up their second Southern Conference win against Furman.
GREENVILLE, SC - Mercer claimed its second Southern Conference win today against Furman University. The Bears went 3-0 with a close-set win at the end.
The teams were evenly matched throughout the sets with both teams having over a hundred attacks and both teams having double-digit kills for multiple players.
Annie Karle had 21 kills on the night with Paige Wagers leading second with 14. Kiera McCarles led both teams in assists with 38 sets. Lexi Uhran also led the teams in digs (16).
The Bears finished the night with a .244 HIT% and 49 kills as a team. The Paladins hitting percentage was .157 with 17 errors in the match.
Set One | Mercer got out to a fast start, taking a 3-0 lead after back-to-back kills from Karle. The Bears continued their momentum with a big kill from Lillian Beardsley. Furman could not keep up and Mercer led 15-10 at the first time out. The Paladins would fight back with a 4-0 scoring run to chip at the lead (21-19). Multiple kills from Karle and errors on Furman's side let the Bears take the set, 25-23.
Set Two | Furman took a big lead at the beginning of the set and held the lead at the first time out (7-2). Mercer slowly chipped away at the lead with kills from Rachel Bell and Morgan Verheyen. The Bears tied it up at 15 for the second time out thanks to another kill from Karle. The teams battled back and forth and tied it up for a third time at 23. An error from the Paladins and a service ace from Wagers brought a 25-23 win.
Set Three | The Bears took an early 6-3 lead with multiple kills from Wagers. Furman fought back and trailed by three the first time out (15-12). The Paladins would take a short lead, but was cut short with back-to-back kills from Karle. The teams tied at 19, 22, 25 and again at 26. An attack error and a tap over the net from Wagers gave the Bears the set.

Mercer will continue conference play in South Carolina against The Citadel tomorrow (Oct. 8) at 7 pm.
